FAQs

Q: What is the Lobo Club?

A: The Lobo Club is the Gateway to Giving for University of New Mexico Athletics that raises funds to help UNM student-athletes succeed on and off the playing surface. Since 1932, Lobo Club members have made donations that provide scholarships, facilities, and all other support necessary for Lobo student-athletes to excel academically and compete for championships.

The Lobo Club is a non-profit organization established to accept private gifts and donations for the benefit of the University of New Mexico Athletic Department. Lobo Club members show their support through donation of funds, products and time.

Q: Can anyone join the Lobo Club?

A: YES! Anyone can join. There are membership levels ranging from $50 to $16,627 and beyond to accommodate everyone’s personal or corporate giving ability.

Q: Why should I donate to the Lobo Club?

A: There are many reasons to donate to the Lobo Club:

  • Support the education of motivated young people through athletic scholarships
  • Community involvement and networking
  • Priority tickets/seats for men’s basketball, football and women’s basketball, as well as football bowl games, Mountain West Conference and NCAA Tournaments hosted or participated in by UNM
  • Parking priority for men’s and women’s basketball and football

Q: Where does the money go?

A: Money raised through Lobo Club contributions directly benefit UNM student-athletes.

Q: How many athletes participate at The University of New Mexico?

A: There are over 450 student-athletes that participate on 21 varsity teams at the University of New Mexico.

Q: How many student-athletes receive scholarships?

A: While this number fluctuates year to year, approximately 325 student-athletes receive scholarship support at UNM on an annual basis. Fully funding all potentially available athletic scholarships at The University of New Mexico would require more than $3.5 million dollars in 2010-11.

Q: Are there payment options and plans available?

A: Absolutely. A donor may pay with cash, check, MasterCard, Visa, American Express or Discover. Additionally, donors can stipulate their own payment schedule (monthly, quarterly, special request) if they do not want to make their full donation at once. There are special requirements for new donors who are requesting season tickets. Please contact our office for more information.

Q: Does the Lobo Club accept matching gifts from companies?

A: Yes, the Lobo Club encourages all donors to check and see if their employer matches charitable contributions. In addition, whenever a company matches the gift of a donor the donor receives full credit for that gift as well as their portion of the gift. For example, a $500 donor gets their company to match their gift (in most cases companies will match 80% of your gift if you have tickets or parking and 100% of your gift if you are not receiving priority benefits). The donor is now a $900 or $1,000 donor, depending on the percentage of the gift matched, in the Lobo Club, which can help when it comes to priority seating, parking, etc. Matching gifts are one more way you can make an even greater contribution to the overall success of Lobo Athletics.

Q: Are there other ways to give to the Lobo Club?

A: Yes. In addition to annual gifts of cash and gifts-in-kind, individuals can give a gift of real estate or securities or establish trusts, bequests and endowments through the Lobo Legacy program. Please call 925-5607 if you have any questions on how to help support student-athletes at UNM through a planned or endowed gift to the Lobo Club.

Q: Is my gift tax deductible?

A: Yes. As a general rule, 80% of your gift is tax deductible. Members will receive a gift receipt at the close of the calendar year stating the gift(s) they made to the Lobo Club. Members are encouraged to speak to their personal financial advisors regarding specific deductions and their gift(s).
